Vancouver 2010 mascots unveiled → drawn.ca

Leave it to Canada to have a cryptozoological beatie like a sasquatch as its Olympic mascot. Earlier today Vancouver 2010 unveiled their Olympic and Paralympic mascots: Quatchi the Sasquatch, Miga the Sea Bear, and Sumi the Thunderbird.

The mythical (and adorable) creatures are the work of Vancouver-based Vicki Wong and Michael Murphy of Meomi Design, who should be no strangers to the readers of Drawn!. These could be the most stylish Olympic mascots yet, and I’m sure will be a big…

Plaxo Sees Exponential Growth as First to Use OpenSocial → mashable.com

The company that got first dibs at implementing OpenSocial gadgets has seen its service grow more than tenfold in the 3 weeks since roll out. Plaxo Pulse, the service that lets you receive live updates on activity going on across your social networks based on the contacts you have in Plaxo, was quick to jump on the OpenSocial train; and that has turned into a gravy train since then.

The spike in new connections says a lot about Plaxo and a lot about OpenSocial, but this…

Sexy Sliding Javascript Menu With Mootools → feeds.feedburner.com

When trying to conceive ways in which space could be saved on a web page Andy Sellick decided a sliding menu would work well as shown in the images below. He decided to use mootools due to the smoothness of their effects, however, this could just as easily be developed in script.aculo.us or other JavaScript libraries.

You can easily customise the look of the sliding menu by CSS. However there may be some CSS issues in Safari but as yet he haven’t had the time to fully test and fix…

Raising the Next Generation with Google Docs → feeds.feedburner.com

Google announced earlier this week that it has partnered with Weekly Reader, a producer of educational materials for children since 1928, to help teach “collaborative writing” to young students in the US. The concept here is fairly straightforward. Using Google Docs (a web-based word processor) and its new revision features, students “can work together from different computers to write and revise the same paper,” which helps drive home the point that writing is a process that…

Google Earth gets weather, new layer layout → feeds.downloadsquad.com

Google has rolled out a few new layers for Google Earth and a redesigned layer menu to help keep them tidy. Major categories get their own heading, while sub-directories are folded into, well, subdirectories.

For example, Google Earth 4.2 now includes a weather layer with sub-folders for clouds, radar, conditions and forecasts, and information. The clouds information is updated hourly with data from the Naval Research laboratory in Monterey….
